HISTORY

The building had been gifted by the Hamilton Family of the nearby Carnell Estate for use as a school. The property and outbuildings had been part of the former estate.

Crossroads School dates back to the 1870’s when the first records of the buildings used as a school are found. The buildings history dates prior to this as possibly a black smiths shop or attached to a working farm steading and part of the main estate.

The first school log book appeared late in 1872. The roll in those formative years had only 25 names attached. In the early 1900’s there were 92 children enrolled from the surrounding parishes of Riccarton, Craigie, Mauchline and Galston.

For many years the Headmaster lived above the schoolroom and, as the school expanded, this room was utilised for school meals – the dinner room - and the red sandstone building beside the school became the School-Master’s house.

Following reforms in 1925 the advanced classes were moved to Hurlford. During the First World War and immediately after the advanced or older pupils had walked into Hurlford Village school for lessons in laundry and woodwork, Sometimes they were conveyed in a horse drawn carriage. In later years they were then taken home by motor vehicle.

From Crossroads School children would then go on to Kilmarnock Academy, James Hamilton High or Hurlford Secondary.

The property was still operating as a school in 1964 it was described in the Kilmarnock Standard as `an old school with fresh ideas` The new school buildings opened shortly after. The school closed late in 2010.

In more recent years the house has been adapted to provide a unique and bespoke quality residence – thoroughly steeped in its own history

LOCATION

The property is set only a few miles from the centre of Kilmarnock and is positioned just off the A76 via a feeder Road in the small Hamlet of Crossroads.

There is an extensive choice of schooling available in nearby Kilmarnock.

Private schooling is available at Wellington in Ayr (16 miles) and in Glasgow (22 miles).

The property is situated within a few miles of the recently up rated and refurbished A77, M77 motorway link and all main arterial routes. This provides easy access for the commuter with links accessing in a Southerly direction towards Ayr and Girvan and the Ayrshire coast and in a Northerly direction toward Glasgow. The West Coast of Ayrshire is only minutes away.

Kilmarnock has a mainline rail station with a comprehensive service to Glasgow and the main west coast line south. Prestwick International Airport has regular and enhanced flight service flights to London, Dublin and the rest of Europe.

Ayr is 16 miles away and is Ayrshire`s foremost town and as such offers a good range of high street shops, supermarkets, recreational and professional facilities. In addition there are a number of well-renowned restaurants.

Ayrshire is famous worldwide for golf with championship courses at Royal Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry (the venue for the current Scottish open in 2009). Colin Montgomery’s new course at Rowallan Castle opens in the spring of 2009. Kilmarnock’s own courses include Caprington and Annanhill.

There is also excellent sailing with yachting marinas at Troon and further up the coast at Largs and Inverkip. Game sports are supported in the region with some of South West Scotland`s finest salmon and trout fishing available in the area`s lochs and rivers.
