The name is derived from a French word meaning 'roe bucks' and, as 'Flamstead' means sanctuary, it is supposed that Cheverells really was 'the sanctuary of thee deer'. The house was built as the dower house to Beechwood Park and remained the ancestral home of the Sebright family for over 260 years either being used by the family or leased to others. Cheverells boasts some royal connections as it is understood Queen Mary visited here during Sir Edgar Sebright's time and that the young King Edward VI spent part of his delicate childhood at nearby Beechwood. The magnificent gardens at Cheverells have connections with famous landscape designer, Capability Brown. He drew up proposals for the landscaping in 1754 and his distinctive style and character are still evident today with many fine examples of mature trees, including oaks, beeches and Scots pine. In recent times the house has been used for the filming of Jonathan Creek by the BBC and The Hours starring Nicole Kidman by Paramount Pictures.
