Street is a popular and busy town in the heart of Somerset with a population of around 12,000. Much of the history of the area is dominated by Glastonbury less than 2 miles away and its name comes from a causeway which was built to transport local blue lias stone to build the Abbey.The Quakers had become established by the mid-17th century and a Quaker family, the Clarks, started a business which became the well known shoe company which still has its headquarters in Street. It's redundant factory buildings were converted to form the nationally known and exceptionally popular Clarks Retail village.Street has a wide range of facilities and amenities, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a leisure centre, a highly regarded theatre/cinema and very good schools including Crispin School, Strode College and Millfield.Castle Cary train station, which provides a main line link to London's Paddington, is about 12 miles distant, Glastonbury is just a mile away and Wells a little further.
