Whippingham: Whippingham is a village approximately 1 mile south of East Cowes in the north of the Island. Whippingham is best known for its connections with Queen Victoria, who's Island Residence was Osborne House. And its church, redesigned by Price Albert. The church has a tower reminiscent of a castle on the Rhine, with five soaring pinnacles. Inside, there are brilliant rose windows and a large octagonal lantern in the centre. The village became the centre of the royal estate supporting Osbourne House and Barton Manor. The local farms, including Heathfield, school, almshouses, forge and cottages were rebuilt when they became part of the Queen's estate and Prince Albert had a 'model farm' built at Barton, Heathfield, Woodhouse etc. Queen Victoria took a close interest in 'her people' in Whippingham, providing for them in sickness and in health. The popular Folly Inn is also found here.
