The Ridings
Beckington is a proud Somerset village, just outside of Frome, within easy reach of both Bath and Bristol. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book, this historic village still enjoys life at a slower, friendlier pace, creating a strong sense of community and belonging for its thousand or so residents.
Enjoy a match at one of the country’s oldest surviving cricket clubs, join the whole community, young and old, for the annual Village Day and the hilarious annual Music Hall production, or simply enjoy a friendly drink in one of the fine local hostelries. Whatever you are looking for in traditional village life, you’ll find it right here in Beckington.
Yet with the A36 right on your doorstep, and regular trains from nearby Frome or Trowbridge, you’ll never feel out of the way or isolated, giving you the very best of both worlds, just like the stunning range of two, three, four and five bedroom Heritage Collection homes we’re building here.
Local Information
Transport
The village has enjoyed a quiet life since the A36 was diverted around it in the late 80s, but this major route still remains just a few minutes away from the village. Frome lies just 3 miles to the south, with Trowbridge just 6 miles to the north. Further afield, Bath is around 12 miles away, with Bristol within easy commuting distance at just 25 miles. The M4 is around 20 miles away, with the M5 around 39 miles.
The nearest rail station is Frome, but you can cut around 20 minutes off the journey time to Bristol by catching the train from Trowbridge instead. Bristol to London takes just 1hr 30mins by train, making the total journey time from Trowbridge around 1hr 50mins, if you time your connections right. Alternatively Westbury, 8 mile away, has a direct service to London and trains to Salisbury, Southampton and Portsmouth. Bristol Airport offers a wide range of flights across the UK and Europe for both business and pleasure.
Education
Beckington has its own Church of England voluntary controlled first school, which is the centre of early years education for most local children. The independent Springmead Preparatory School, also located in the village, offers a private alternative for 3 to 11 year olds.
For secondary education older children will naturally have to travel. Beckington children can choose between Somerset schools, including Selwood School and Frome Community College, or Wiltshire schools, including the John Gaunt School and St Augustine’s Catholic College in Trowbridge.
Much high quality private education can be found close by, including Warminster School and at Bath’s Prior Park College. The University of Bath and Bath Spa University are both close by, along with Trowbridge College.
Leisure
As you would expect, leisure in the village revolves around the more traditional pastimes. Beckington Tennis Association hires courts at a very reasonable rate, while Beckington Cricket Club, dating back to 1884, is always on the lookout for players, helpers and supporters alike. For a wider choice of sports, head for Frome, where you’ll find football and rugby clubs, along with Frome Leisure Centre and Frome Golf Club.
Beckington Memorial Hall holds regular events, including the highlight of the calendar, the Music Hall. For more modern entertainment, head for the Westway Cinema, Merlin Theatre and memorial Theatre in Frome, or the Odeon in Trowbridge.
When it comes to a fascinating family day out, you’ll be spoiled for choice, with everything from the lions of Longleat to the strange history of Stonehenge, the caves of Cheddar Gorge to the baths of ancient Rome all within easy reach.
Dining
England’s historic villages are renowned for their warm, welcoming village inns, and Beckington is no exception. Check out the Woolpack Inn or the Forester’s Arms for a great range of tasty home cooked food accompanied by real ales. The surrounding villages also boast excellent inns of their own, such as the Full Moon at Rudge, The Mill at Rode, The Bell at Standerwick and The Old Bath Arms and the Arch Angel in Frome.
For a more cosmopolitan choice of eateries head for Bath or Bristol, where you’ll find something to satisfy every palate and every pocket.

Shopping
Sadly, the village post office was cut from Beckington a few years ago, taking with it the local shop. Some groceries can be purchased from the local garage mini market and the well-stocked Whiterow Farm Shop. Frome town has Sainsbury's, Asda, M & S and Tesco Express, along with a large number of well know stores and local independents.
For a real shopping trip, head for Southgate Shopping Centre in Bath, or the huge Cabot Circus in Bristol, where you’ll find over 120 leading stores over several floors, along with a huge range of restaurants and a 13 screen cinema.
For an outlet bargain, head for Glastonbury for Clarks Village, Shepton Mallet’s Kilver Court or Bristol’s Cribbs Causeway.
