Description
North Road is a popular residential area, which runs between the top of St. Thomas Street, past the Cathedral School towards New Street entering Wells. It is a pleasant residential area and is within easy walking distance of the centre and amenities. No. 12 is located on the south side of North Road with all the principal rooms facing southwards into its own walled garden and as such enjoys a peaceful, sunny position with a great deal of privacy. The house dates from the 1920s, a period known in architectural terms as Tudorbethan style influenced by the Arts and Craft movement and which evolved after the Edwardian period when houses were reflecting more modern family living patterns. No. 12 clearly shows this style and also has the benefit of being extended including the addition of a sitting room and a large master bedroom with a dressing room and en suite bathroom.
*
The house retains period details including oak parquet flooring, ceiling coving and roses and original brass door furniture. These are complemented by more recent benefits including gas central heating and a well appointed kitchen and well fitted bathrooms. Many of the rooms have large windows and a double aspect which results in light and airy accommodation. Flooring includes tiles, fitted carpets and painted floorboards. An outer porch leads to an inner porch and through into the wide reception hall which leads to the drawing and dining rooms and also the kitchen. The drawing room is well proportioned, has a double aspect and a fireplace (with a Jetmaster) is the focal point. The dining room is also a good size with a large bay window.
**
The kitchen and breakfast room has a double aspect, a Wicanders floor and french doors to a garden terrace. There is more than ample space for a breakfast table (with a gas heater close by) and there is an extensive range of sycamore units and appliances. These include customary floor and wall units, a crescent shaped peninsular and a central island. These provide extensive cupboard and drawer units plus granite worktops. Integral appliances include an excellent Mercury range cooker with a 5 ring gas hob and electric ovens, an extractor and a dishwasher. Leading off the kitchen is an inner hall with garden doors and a cloakroom with a basin and wc. Next is the utility room with a belfast sink, a wine fridge, fitted units and a gas fired boiler. The side hall also gives access to the sitting room - another bright and cheerful triple aspect room with french doors to the garden and a gas fired stove.
***
A staircase from the reception hall leads to a large landing which also provides plenty of space for a desk and study area. It also has airing cupboards and access to a large attic. The master bedroom is a very luxurious room with a triple aspect and wide opening doors to a balcony - south facing with views of the Cathedral and countryside beyond. It's also a well designed room with an internal wall dividing off a dressing area with fitted wardrobes.
