DESCRIPTION In the heart of Dartmoor on an elevated position, where one can walk freely or miles and miles in any direction, Kit Lodge nestles amid glorious and unique countryside. The lodge, built of traditional block and slate, is modernist in style. Its open plan design with large glass windows on two sides takes maximum advantage of this incredible location. It was first built in 1977 on the site of a former wooden holiday lodge. Residing at the lodge, it felt for the owners as if they were on a permanent holiday. From here they raised their family, commuted to work, and entertained their visitors, putting the natural attributes of the lodge to excellent use, with fabulous parties and special fund-raising events.
Kit Lodge has been transformed and extended over the years to achieve the look the property has today. Sitting on the decking that graces two sides of the building, it is easy to delight in the scenery, enjoying coffee and cake in the morning and possibly a glass of something special later in the afternoon sun � not to mention a candle-lit supper al fresco under the stars of a clear midnight blue sky. There are more stars here, visible on a clear night, than almost anywhere else we can think of as the property is elevated and also the lack of light pollution.
Once all the glass doors are pulled back, everyone can flow in and out as they please on to the decking or into the gently sloping garden with its plentiful shrubs and trees. It is wonderful to watch the seasons change from Kit Lodge, the trees changing from green to hues of gold and red in the autumn; the tors and trees dressed in the white of the occasional snow in winter; and the icy frost making way for the first wild flowers of spring. The owners say it is akin to a moving oil painting.
At Kit Lodge one can be reclusive amid the peace and seclusion of this magical location. But the property is in fact located on the edge of the delightful village of Postbridge, where there is a post office and stores, a pub, a country hotel, church and a village hall. The family here saw it as a privilege to be able to take part in village events. Kit Lodge has been a truly special home, which has meant that for more than four decades the owners and their family have been able to enjoy the splendours of Dartmoor, its purple heather-gowned moorland, magical wide-open landscape, and awesome stone tors.
