Penton House is a fine period late Georgian semi-detached house superbly situated in a very private and secluded setting yet just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre and all amenities. Penton House is a superbly presented late Georgian period house that forms almost half of a very substantial and imposing detached 18th century period property. Dating originally from the 18th century the house was sympathetically extended in about 1870 by creating a West wing which now forms Penton House. The delightful symmetrical elevations of both houses reflect the superb Georgian appearance with original tall sash windows, smooth rendered masonry and traditional gently pitched roof with square chimneys.

The house retains numerous splendid original features including in the main entrance hall a pair of very substantial ornate chestnut columns which rise to the high ceiling which has a matching cross beam. 7' high solid oak doors, an original marble tiled floor, a superb elegant living room which has a wonderful marble fireplace fitted with a woodburning stove, ornate cornicing and high skirting boards.

The house has undergone several noteworthy improvements including re-roofing in 1991, installation of mains gas central heating, full external and internal redecoration, and some of the first floor rooms have been reconfigured which has improved the layout.

HISTORICAL NOTE: Penton House is mentioned in Christopher Hassall's biography 'Rupert Brooke' where there is an account of a visit to Crediton in 1911, when a party of the Cambridge friends were camping near Drewsteignton. They went at invitation of Paul Montague and his mother to Penton where they had 'dining room tea' and the book has a picture of the dining room at Penton (now the living room). Brooke subsequently wrote a poem entitled 'Dining Room Tea' and it was in the course of his visit that he was reputed to have had a mystical experience described in the poem.

CREDITON is an old Mid Devon market town with a wealth of history, being situated just 7.5 miles north-west of the Cathedral City of Exeter with the M5 motorway some 3 miles further on. The town is surrounded by unspoilt farmland in an area of great natural beauty. There is a regular daily bus service to Exeter plus trains every hour to Exeter and Barnstaple and a local town bus which covers most urban areas. The town is most famous for its ancient parish church and for being the birthplace of St Boniface in 680 AD. It has excellent schooling facilities at both senior and junior levels and a sports and leisure centre incorporating a superb swimming pool. The town has an excellent selection of shops with a Morrisons and a large Tesco superstore/petrol filling station. 

DIRECTIONS From the centre of Crediton turn into Market Street, and follow the road until arriving at a mini-roundabout at the bottom of Jockey Hill. Take the first left, and then immediately turn right across the road into 'Penton Lane'. Follow the lane for about 250 metres, and the secluded entrance gate will be found for Penton House on the left hand side.
