Surrounding Area
Penhow (Welsh: Pen-hw) is a small village and community parish just inside the eastern edge of the boundary of the city of Newport, South Wales, within the historic and beautiful county of Monmouthshire. The name Penhow is believed to be derived from the Welsh word Pen meaning head or top and How derived from the Old Norse word Haugr meaning hill or mound.[2]Penhow is best known for Penhow Castle, which has claims to be the oldest inhabited castle in Wales. It is close to the parish church of St John the Baptist. There are currently two pubs in the village, The Rock and Fountain and The Groes Wen.There is easy access by Motorway and Rail to Cardiff and Bristol. There are currently two Infant/Junior schools in Undy/Magor and a Comprehensive school in nearby Caldicot. There is Doctors surgery in Magor, and hospitals are within easy reach in Chepstow and Newport. Magor Square is host to several shops, including a Post Office, and the shopping centre in Caldicot is a flat, pedestrian area with free parking. There are twice weekly markets in the town centre. Caldicot has an active leisure centre with swimming pool and there are several golf courses nearby. The town is proud of its history, and it's Medieval Castle with spacious grounds and Country Park which are free for local residents to use.
