About the area
Cossington is a pretty and popular traditional village with a pub and thriving village hall. It lies between the towns of Bridgwater and Street (bus services to each) and the M5 motorway, (junction 23), is less than 4 miles with good access north to Bristol & south to Taunton, Exeter & the remainder of the West Country. Taunton has main line rail connections to London. There are excellent state and independent schools in the area including Strode College and Millfield at Glastonbury and Street.
History
Cossington was probably part of the ancient Polden estate of Glastonbury Abbey. Before 1066 it was held of the abbey which retained an interest until 1508 or later. In 1571 and 1615 the manor was said to be held of the Crown in right of the former monastery. In 1839 the Graham family acquired an estate which included Cossington House being a classical house probably built circa 1806. In 1863 a wing in an eclectic 16th-century style was added which virtually doubled the size of the house. The property to be sold is the original Georgian part, being Grade II listed.
Accommodation
Cossington House is within the village but on the southern edge with uninterrupted views over the bordering countryside. It is a very handsome house having a classical, symmetrical front elevation with a central doorway with a semi circular head supported by Tuscan pillars and an attractive fanlight. Internally many original architectural details remain with 14ft. high ceilings, flagstone floors, a cantilevered stone staircase, decorative arches with detailed mouldings, window shutters, curved doors, and fine plasterwork.

A private drive leads to a gravelled carriage sweep and the main entrance. Double outer doors and double inner doors lead to the splendid HALL with high ceilings, flagstones and the cantilevered stone staircase with ornamental iron balusters and a wreathed mahogany handrail, all of which establish the standard and quality of the property. CLOAKROOM off the hall with a hidden door to a walk in storage cupboard. The DRAWING ROOM has period cornicing and ceiling rose, two large, south facing sash windows, original stripped floorboards and open fireplace. A wide, panelled opening leads into the DINING ROOM again with a full height sash window, seagrass floor covering and fireplace. The SITTING ROOM being a less formal reception room again has two full height sash windows, fitted bookcase, picture and dado rails and fireplace.

The immaculate flagstone flooring continues from the hall into the KITCHEN with an oil fired 4-door AGA range, bespoke fitted kitchen units with polished granite and hardwood worktops, twin bowl Belfast sink and a large pantry cupboard. The UTILITY ROOM leads off with fitted base and wall units matching the style of the kitchen, Belfast sink and spaces for the washing machine, microwave and a secondary fridge freezer. Glazed French doors open onto a wrought iron balcony with steps down to the courtyard. The staircase in Cossington house is one of the major features of the property. The cantilevered stonework steps, mahogany handrail and wrought iron spindles are believed to be based on the \"Adam brothers\" style of the late 1760's. The stairs sweep up to the first floor and pass a beautifully restored glazed window overlooking the courtyard garden.
