Location Holt is one of Norfolk's most popular and attractive towns situated just a few miles from the north Norfolk coastline. The town itself is believed to date back at least to Roman times and appears in William the Conqueror's Domesday Book as a settlement in 1086. In 1708 the Great Fire of Holt destroyed the majority of buildings which had to be replaced giving the town centre its Georgian appearance.
Today Holt is a thriving and expanding town with an excellent range of shopping, educational and other facilities. The northern part of the town forms part of a huge Conservation Area that joins, through the historic town centre, with the Glaven Valley to the west, Holt Lowes and Country Park to the south and into the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the north. The town centre has many tea and coffee shops, lots of antique and curio shops, food shops and delicatessens, banks, independent shops and, of course, the historic Gresham's School founded in 1555.
The north Norfolk coast at Cley-next-the-Sea and Blakeney are just a few miles north with good sailing, golf, bird-watching and many good beaches nearby. The North Norfolk Steam Railway has its terminus on the outskirts of the town and connects with the seaside resort of Sheringham six miles away. The cathedral city of Norwich is just twenty-six miles distant. From Norwich there are direct trains to London Liverpool Street and Norwich Airport is a convenient worldwide gateway via Schiphol Airport.
