Barugh House is a village house of classical Georgian proportions and façade, with a later, Victorian addition at the rear. The house was built in the late 18th century and enjoys an elevated position in the village with far-reaching views. To some it may seem strange that the Vale of Pickering offers undulating country, since the perception is often of a flat plain between the Howardian Hills and North York Moors. But barugh (pronounced “barf”) means rising ground, and there is indeed a perceptible incline in the village, with Barugh House sitting almost at the highest point. Notable features include:

There is a thriving pub in the village and schools, both state and private, nearby. The countryside around is undulating agricultural land, affording expansive views.
