The area is renowned for its stunning countryside and there is an abundance of outdoor activities throughout the year both locally and in the near by villages including fabulous walks, water sports along the river and various annual events in cycling and horse riding. The village itself offers excellent amenities including shopping, doctors, dentist and vets along with good pubs and the leisure centre.
Schools in Downton include a highly regarded primary school being rated as Outstanding in the 2013 Ofsted report, a community pre-school and excellent secondary school. It is within the catchment are for Salisbuiry Grammar schools and also has regular busses to the nearby equally excellent Burgate School and Sixth Form Centre in Fordingbridge.
A regular bus service runs to Salisbury city which has a mainline rail station to London Waterloo and offers an excellent selection of both local and national shopping names, together with first rate leisure and restaurant facilities to suit most tastes as well as easy access to the A36, A338, A30, A345 and A354 trunk routes.
