Vendor Testimonial:
• My husband and I knew about the company and how it organised sheltered living for owners as my father-in-law had lived in another of their properties, Blake Court in London. Care and support is available should you need it, but unobtrusive if you don’t. So, we were already impressed with the general set up but crucially, in our view, the company is excellent at choosing the right people as staff.
• Weekly help with cleaning is provided as standard as part of the regular service charge. This is great, as not only is the owner relieved of this chore, but care staff and owners are getting to know each other which is good for both if extra support is needed later.
• Staff are available at all times should an owner suffer an emergency event such as a fall.
• Regular extra support is available if needed at a reasonable cost. This could be help with medication, eating and drinking and/or personal care. This care is provided by BSC’s own staff who the owner already knows and who know them.
• Advice is also available regarding claiming benefits, extra financial or OT assistance should that be relevant or needed.
The Flat
• Even though she was reluctant to leave her former home, Mum liked apartment 26 immediately. It is light, airy and spacious. The living room with its four windows has ample room for relaxed seating, storage furniture and a dining table and chairs.
• 2 bedrooms meant that visitors from afar could stay with her as they had always done.
• 2 bath/shower rooms, both en suite with one also accessible from the hall is an excellent facility.
• It is not on the ground floor! This is obviously a matter of personal preference. Mum “didn’t want passers-by looking in…”. She however, enjoyed her vantage point up and down the road observing joggers, dog-walkers etc. when she sat at her table at mealtimes.
• The emergency pull cord/intercom system in all flats is immensely useful and reassuring as emergency back up in calling for help or for regular check-ins if wanted.
In Mum’s case, her mobility was already restricted when she moved in and she never left the flat unescorted but she was independent within so for a few years enjoyed the weekly help with her housework and that was it. However when she did need extra support with her medication, eating and drinking, and later with personal care, this was able to be supplied by in-house staff. This extra support enabled Mum to live in her own home for about three years longer than would otherwise have been the case.
Mum had great fun with her carers. There was lots of lively banter. She had a ‘captive audience’ for her rose-coloured memories of a 1920s childhood and war years in the ATS! As a family we have been greatly reassured by Mum living here and are very grateful for the care and companionship she enjoyed. She felt safe and cared for and always said how lucky she was. Her only regret was that my father hadn’t lived here with her. “He’d have loved it here” she said. So, it has been a happy flat and we hope and expect whoever buys it will be equally as happy.
