Property description
Set among the rolling hills of the Kent countryside, De Havillands is an attractive enclave of 10 large, individually designed properties on the outskirts of the village of Bekesbourne. It was the site of an aerodrome during World War I and was the home of the Kent Flying Club until World War II when it was closed. One large hangar remained but it was severely damaged by and rebuilt after the Great Storm of October 1987, but in 1997 the site was redeveloped to create the De Havillands estate.
This property nestles on the edge of the development and is directly adjacent to arable farmland , with wonderful vistas across the fields. The elegant hall with views to the galleried landing above provides a feeling of spaciousness from the moment you walk through the front door. This atmosphere continues as you wander into the attractive sitting room with its brick fireplace and access to the well stocked garden and a large terrace for summer barbecues.
The beautifully fitted kitchen/breakfast room is the heart of the home where the family can sit round the table enjoying a meal or chatting over a cup of coffee. For more formal dinner parties the well proportioned, dining room will thrill any guest and if you do work from home the study is ideal. There is also a small snug that would make a great spot for older children to have their own space.
With five large bedrooms including the master with its walk in wardrobe and en suite bathroom and a delightful guest suite with great views across the countryside, this house lends itself to being a wonderful family home and a magnet for visitors looking to experience the delights of rural living.
What the Owner says:
“We have lived in Bekesbourne for the last 36 years and in this house for the last 13. We chose it for its feeling of space, peaceful location and splendid views over the surrounding countryside. Being in a cul de sac, it is also extremely safe and secure for any children who live here. Over our years in De Havillands, we have enjoyed creating an attractive and easily-managed garden, which is a feature of the property and a great place for summer parties.
There are plenty of local footpaths for wonderful walks and a riding stables is virtually on the doorstep. It’s only a short stroll down the hill to rural shopping at Chalkpit Farm, where there is an excellent deli and coffee shop, as well as a vet with a hydrotherapy centre, a florist and other useful shops.
Bekesbourne is such a friendly village with a beautiful and active parish church and many activities centred on the village hall and recreation ground. We benefit from a main line railway station with free parking as well as bus services to Canterbury and to Bridge Primary School.
We are so well placed here to enjoy rural life, but are also very close to all the shops, facilities and village activities in Bridge, with its popular school, as well as to the shops and cultural life of Canterbury. There we frequently visit the newly-built Marlowe Theatre, which attracts pre- London productions and Glyndbourne Touring Opera.”
