Property description

PROPERTY SUMMARY The Manor House is the premier residence on Hayling Island and has played an important part in its long history. A fine country house with parkland and grounds of 4.51 acres, including and ornamental lake. The Manor House is an imposing and classic Georgian building and an architectural gem. Approached via a sweeping U shaped drive to the west of the house, the southern façade of The Manor House is the more impressive with a classical brick pediment and circular window set into the roof elevation. The entrance porch also has classical echoes with semi-circular stone steps, Doric columns and fanlight over the front door. Now upgraded and modernised to the highest specification, but retaining many original and character features, this fine Manor House provides superb and elegant family accommodation laid out over three floors. The five formal reception rooms are all beautifully proportioned, as is the superb master bedroom suite on the first floor. On the top floor are four further large bedrooms and bathroom. Outside lie several paddocks and parkland, including an ornamental lake and a walled garden laid to lawn with the adjacent Dovecote and adjoining it a gymnasium. The store rooms outside the kitchen comprise a potting shed, log store, bin store and garden store. There is also garaging and a stable block.

Country houses of this quality seldom come to the market and viewing is highly recommended to fully appreciate its exceptional interiors and period features.

Hayling Island was ceded by William the Conquer to French Jumiegnes monks in 1067 and the Grange to the medieval Benedictine Priory was subsequently built on the site in the centre of the island. The 65' medieval dovecote, one of the oldest in the country with its original brick nesting boxes set into the walls, remains. The present Manor House built on these foundations and described as 'handsome' by Nikolaus Pevsner dates from 1777 and served as a hunting lodge for Edward Duke of Norfolk who live at Arundel. In 1825 the island was sold to William Padwick who was responsible for building the first bridge across to the mainland. The Manor House remained in the Padwick family until 1971.

Occupying a central position on the island, The Manor House is well located for easy access to the golf course, sailing club and beaches that Hayling Island offers as well as easy access to Havant to the north via the bridge at Langstone with its mainline station to London Waterloo and via the A27 to the Cathedral City of Chichester to the east with its Festival Theatre and Goodwood with its celebrated Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival for motor racing enthusiasts and the season of horse racing including Glorious Goodwood. Portsmouth to the west is renowned for its maritime history including HMS Victory and the Mary Rose, Henry VIII's famous warship which sank in the 16th Century in the Solent.
