For some people, and I'm one of them, living in the centre of a thriving town and all that it has to offer, is very desirable. St Neots is an ancient market town that has grown in popularity as a location for those wishing to be near good rail and road links to London or the North. St Neots has a great deal to commend it a large architecturally interesting market square where a weekly market is still held, a substantial High Street with a good selection of high-street stores, there are several superstores and a new multi-screen cinema. Dining out is not an issue with plenty of decent restaurants and pubs to choose from and for those looking for a new hobby there is a huge number of arts, crafts and sports clubs and societies to cater for all members of the family. The river Ouse courses its way through one end of the town, surrounded by the beautiful Riverside Park, which is a great place for children to feed the ducks or take the dog on a long leisurely walk. The other end of the town doesn't lose out either, having the Priory Park, which has the most glorious large trees, creating a tranquil area to walk around. You might have guessed that I'm very fond of St Neots but it means nothing if it doesn't have the type of property you are looking for, please read on.In the heart of St Neots are some beautiful period properties and at the high end of these is the stunning double-fronted 'Springbank', which exudes Victorian charm, having more original features than you could possibly hope for. Located on Avenue Road, renowned for its range of period properties, Springbank has a small front garden, generous drive and large double garage, so none of the parking problems one expects from town living. Springbank was first constructed in 1896 and has been much loved ever since. There is a very sympathetic extension to the back but none of its Victorian charisma has been lost in the process. As one would expect from this type of property the rooms are nicely symmetrical with lovely high ceilings and the sitting room has an exceptionally beautiful marble fireplace and, to make my day complete, the fire was roaring. Is there such a thing as fireplace envy?Both the sitting room and the dining room opposite have amazing large bay-windows and the whole house is light and airy. Towards the well equipped kitchen there is a breakfast room, very handy, and to one side is a large conservatory with a five-layer Perspex roof, which helps prevent extreme temperature changes. The stairs to the first floor are quirky and there are three really good sized bedrooms plus a family bathroom and a very useful separate shower room close to the master bedroom. The back garden is a real surprise, being much larger than I expected. It has been beautifully maintained and contains a rockery that is 100 years old, now that's impressive. Moving in to a new home is as much about the lifestyle as it is about bricks and mortar. This is a family home, if you want it to be and is in close proximity to the train station and in the catchment area of some very good schools. The features of the house would appeal to anyone with a sense of history but, alternatively, it would adapt to any style you might prefer, be it modern-minimalist or full-on Victoriana. This delightful house deserves a look, I'm sure it will charm you as much as it did me. And St Neots deserves a second glance too, if you want the convenience of being right at the centre of all that the town has to offer.
