Property description
This handsome family home, the original part of which dates back to c1750, occupies a superb location in the heart of the sought after village of Box. After my husband relocated to the area for work thirteen years ago, we spent a long time searching for the perfect home, says Mary. We wanted to live in a village location, but not too far out in the sticks, so Box was the perfect compromise. Its a large village with a vibrant community, with an outstanding primary school, cricket club, bowling club, yoga, tennis courts, amateur dramatics, playground, recreation ground, as well as lovely river and countryside walks. In the village there is a butchers, Co-op, café, post office, newsagent, two hairdressers, Indian take-away and the Queens Head, Quarrymans Arms, and Northey Arms. It is also just under 6 miles from the centre of Bath; so for us it has been ideal.Wed previously lived in a large Victorian house in Bristol, and were used to its grand proportions, so from the minute we walked through the front door of Northfield House it ticked a lot of boxes. One enters a large hall with beautiful mouldings and all of the rooms are spacious and many have wonderfully high ceilings, and there are some gorgeous features throughout, so its extremely characterful. It was definitely in need of renovation when we moved here, but in everything that we have done we have tried remain true to the architectural origins of the house, but its by no means fussy. There are fireplaces in many rooms, some of which we discovered during the renovations, and some really ornate cornicing. Its just a very comfortable and beautiful home to live in.The kitchen has French doors that lead out onto the patio terrace, so theres a nice connection between inside and out, continues Mary, and just around the corner we have a sunken garden, which is a lovely walled area where we can sit out and eat. The rest of the space is mainly laid to lawn and enveloped by a beautiful old stone wall, so theres a good degree of privacy, and it is south facing, so bathed in sunshine during the summer. The sitting room is a particularly beautiful part of the house, says Mary. Its a huge space with a big bay window and a large open fire. Its where we have our piano, so its a lovely room to entertain in, particularly at Christmas.Theres so much going on in the village and its a beautiful place to bring up a family, says Mary. There are many young families in the village, and it is also a vibrant musical centre as Peter Gabriels recording studio is just down the road. We also benefit from having Bath just a stones throw away and were surrounded by some quite spectacular countryside; its a location that in my mind would be hard to better. We also have a double garage and a gravel driveway on which we can fit up to four cars, says Mary, which, as parking is at a premium in the village, has been a real bonus. This has been a really wonderful family home and theres so much that well miss when we leave, says Mary, but our daughters are moving on, and it really needs another family to fill it and enjoy it.
