Property description

This imposing Grade II listed character property is simply stunning. It is a beautiful family home that was built in 1840 and is spread over four floors, including a self-contained apartment on the lower ground floor. It is steeped in history and was the home of renowned potter Alfred G. Hopkins during the 1930s, where he and his brother Henry Loveday Hopkins set up a School of Pottery. The house has been sensitively renovated over the years but still retains some delightful period features including antique marble fireplaces, original cornices, high skirting boards, sash windows, shutters and picture rails. The modern bespoke kitchen/dining room is the real heart of the house with its bi-folding doors to the terrace and garden providing a wonderfully airy space where friends and family can gather round the dining table or wander out onto the terrace on warmer days. The facilities will delight any aspiring chef and include a range cooker, built-in fridge/freezer, dishwasher and a charmingly handcrafted central island.

There is an elegant sitting room with a magnificent fireplace and French doors to the orangery that runs along the back of the property as well as access to a large music room. This versatile space also has doors to the orangery and could be used as a family/games room, gym or study for anyone who wants to have a large office at home. There is a utility room on the half-landing and three double bedrooms on the first floor with views across to the sea at Stone Bay. These include fitted wardrobes in all rooms. There is a lovely bathroom with a stand-alone claw foot bath and a modern Jack and Jill wet room style shower room with access via the landing and one of the bedrooms. The top floor consists of a bedroom with excellent views that would make a great hideaway for a teenager looking for a bit of privacy and independence.

The self-contained apartment is currently being used as a holiday let so could continue to generate an income as a separate entity. It is approached via a separate front door and includes a sitting room, kitchen, two double bedrooms and both a shower room and a bathroom. However, there is an internal door access to the rest of the property so it has the flexibility to become part of the main house and could be ideal for elderly family members or adult children. The flint walled and well-fenced secluded garden has some charming mature shrubs and flower borders and provides plenty of space for children to play on the lawn.

What the Owner says:

We have loved living here over the past 10 years but our children are growing up now and we feel it is time to look for something a little smaller. We have enjoyed doing up the property and being able to entertain our family and friends in our lovely kitchen/dining room as well as outside.
We are very central for the town being just a few minutes’ walk from the vibrant high-street in Broadstairs with its many restaurants and shops and it is a short but pleasant stroll along the clifftop to the sandy beaches of Stone Bay and Viking Bay.
For the commuter, the station is within easy reach and local bus routes are close by if you want to go to the Westwood Cross shopping centre or Ramsgate and Margate. Our home is also near a variety of local schools including infant, junior and grammar schools.
