About the area
The village of Godney lies well away from busy roads in the area between Wells, Glastonbury, Street and Wedmore. Bristol, Bath, Taunton and Yeovil are within commuting distance with Castle Cary the nearest train stations with fast links to London. Wells, the smallest city in England, lies in beautiful countryside below the Mendip Hills - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its medieval centre has local markets twice a week, good restaurants, a thriving high street and many important ancient buildings, including the Cathedral and moated Bishops Palace. Throughout the year Wells hosts festivals for Music, Literature, Art and Food, and has twinned links with Burgundy, the Rhineland and Northern Italy.
*
Glastonbury's past and its present are linked with its dominant landmark, the Tor. It's been a religious centre throughout history and further back into the times of legends. The town grew up alongside the Abbey and today it's a thriving market town and a major tourist venue. Medieval Glastonbury - designated a conservation area - clusters around the evocative ruins of the Abbey. The Saxon village of Wedmore has existed for well over a thousand years and is a delightful and extremely active centre. There are historic buildings including the medieval church next to an old coaching inn.
* *
Wells, Glastonbury, Street and Wedmore provide a wide range of shops, pubs, restaurants, commercial, sporting and cultural facilities and organisations. There are many societies and clubs for those who would like to join a diverse social community.There are excellent state & independent schools in the area which include several good primary schools, Sexeys, Wells Blue School, Strode College, Wells Cathedral School, Downside, All Hallows and Millfield.

The village has a very busy community centred on the village hall with many local activities and a very popular village pub with a reputation for excellent food.Immediately available from the village are footpaths bridleways and droves which give access to the beautiful surrounding countryside. It is usual to see swans, herons, deer and other wildlife within or on the fringes of the village. In an issue of Country Living the Somerset Levels were considered one of \"Britain's Best Wild Places\". Over the last couple of decades Godney has attracted a very interesting and varied collection of residents in addition to the local village and farming community. These have included artists, architects, industry recognised musicians, lecturers, barristers, business people, historians and genealogists, (Time Team), environmentalists, antique restorers and a few titled individuals. All seem to fit in well to this small community and village which has developed along the banks of the River Sheppey.
Accommodation
The Old Vicarage has a wonderful position on a small hillock surrounded by meadows on the outskirts of the village and with great views across the neighbouring countryside on all sides and extending to the Mendip Hills. One of the attractions of the area is that it's well away from all busy roads and traffic noise and yet is within a 5 minutes or less drive of the A roads which link Wells to Glastonbury and Wells to Wedmore. All three centres being a short drive away. Any traffic on the lanes around the property is probably going to Godney as it's not a \"rat run\" or short cut to anywhere. Such properties in such areas are increasingly hard to find.
