Property History
Mansion House has long been an imposing Lichfield Street residence and has undergone numerous transformations under various owners throughout the years. The history of the house can be traced back to the 18th century when William Bill, Steward to the Right Honorable Granville Leveson Gower (later Duke of Sutherland), purchased two three storey cottages from Katherine Hales in 1778. Later in the same year, he purchased just over half an acre of adjoining land from Earl Gower, on which Mansion House was eventually built. Following William's death in 1785, his properties passed to his eldest son, Robert Bill, who constructed Mansion House, interconnecting with the two original cottages. Following Robert's death in 1827, the property was briefly tenanted by surgeon William Heeley before being purchased in May of 1828 by Charles Bromley, a shoe manufacturer. Charles extended the front facade of the house, adding the two bays and the stone cladding as well as the ornate cast-iron balustrades (constructed by Rangeley and Dixon) that can still be seen today. Mansion House remained in the ownership of the Bromley family until 1920 when it was purchased by Mrs Maude Fry, the wife of Augustine Craddock Fry who was a medical practitioner with a practice on Stone High Street. Although changing hands a number of times, doctors remained in residence until 1991, when the property was purchased by the current owners. In 2014 the property underwent significant renovation, with the restoration of period features and the installation of all the modern amenities one would expect of a substantial modern family home.
Additional Features
Mansion House benefits from a web enabled CCTV and alarm system, which can be remotely armed and disarmed from a connected mobile phone. All rooms are connected to an internal telephone system, to which the entry gates are also connected allowing for the vehicle or pedestrian gates to be opened remotely throughout the house.
