Property description
The Chequers is a historically significant and characterful property that occupies a prominent position right in the heart of the charming Wiltshire village of Box, close to the city of Bath. The earliest part of the property is thought to date back to Tudor times, but reputedly there has been an inn on the site as far back as the 13th century. Retaining many of its original features and spaces, The Chequers beguiles you with its charm whilst offering a very versatile and spacious family home, says the owner. The village is very picturesque with fabulous views over the surrounding countryside, excellent facilities and a vibrant and creative local community. This beautiful home boasts an impressive Tudor fireplace, spacious entertaining and dining areas as well as plenty of additional accommodation and studio space. For me, The Chequers was an intriguing and warmly atmospheric family home. In our time, much has been done in consideration of the historical integrity of the property whilst being mindful of the flow and heart of the space. A combination of exposed stone walls and lime plastering displays character and taste, whilst offering plenty of potential to a new owner to come in and enhance the property further, in terms of both living and ancillary accommodation.I would describe the garden as something of a blank canvas, says the owner. Its a huge space, some of which has been landscaped, but there are other areas that are very adaptable and offer beautiful views across the village rooftops and surrounding countryside. Its a very tranquil spot, like a private sanctuary despite its position in the centre of the village. Its hard to choose my favourite space (other than the childrens favourite snug), says the owner. All the spaces are so different, but one of the most unique is the formal dining room. It was once the Inns cellar and as such has an impressively engineered Bath stone arched ceiling. Its a truly original place to entertain in. Living in the heart of this wonderfully vibrant village and being in such close proximity to Bath has enabled us to experience the very best of both worlds, says the owner. I feel Ive been able to take advantage of all the benefits of a rural lifestyle as well as all the joys of a cosmopolitan city; for me the location has been absolutely ideal. In addition to the myriad of spaces in the main house, this charming property also boasts a self-contained, one bedroom apartment. There is also the potential to create another two bedroom apartment, and plans have been drawn up to convert the old coach house into a totally separate dwelling. This house has been at the heart of the village, both in terms of its position and socially, for many hundreds of years, says the owner, and its a property that, to this day, has a uniquely magical atmosphere. I love the community and creativity in the village, so Im planning to stay, but Ill definitely miss the space, character and sense of history in this beautiful home.
