Property description
You would not believe the delights you will find in this charming Grade II listed property in Burgate. It is in the very heart of Canterbury, opposite the cathedral, and less than a minute’s walk from the White Friars shopping centre. One of the most surprising features is the sliding electronic wood gate that opens to reveal a courtyard garden and a private driveway for three or four cars – something incredibly rare in the very centre of the city. However, the sight that greets you when you open the front door is also totally unexpected. When you first see the arched entrance hall leading to the sweeping two-storey staircase and directly through to the kitchen/ breakfast room at the end of the hall, you will be amazed at the spacious and flexible accommodation available, coupled with the warm and family-friendly atmosphere. The elegant dining room leads through bi-folding doors to the attractive drawing room, providing a wonderful overall space for sumptuous dinners, family celebrations and Christmas parties. There is even a cellar where you can store your favourite wines. Everywhere you look there are some charming period features giving the house plenty of character – whether it is the cast iron and marble fireplaces, dado rails, high skirting boards, multi-pane sash windows or panelled doors, these have all been painstakingly restored by the owners to create a wonderful ambience. The first-floor sitting room overlooks Burgate and the Postern Gate to the cathedral grounds. It is a large but cosy room with an open fire and beautifully created bookcases and is just the place for the family to spend time together, although it could always be turned into another large bedroom if required. The master bedroom is on this floor with its unique bed backdrop and en suite facilities while the second floor includes one en suite bedroom, two further bedrooms and a dressing room that could be developed into a family bathroom.
What the Owner says:
We have loved living in the centre of Canterbury during the past seven years where we can so easily walk to the shops, restaurants, pubs and theatres as well as wander through the Cathedral grounds. However, we now feel it is time to move on to a new chapter in our lives. When this house was first acquired, like so many of the properties along Burgate, it had been previously used as offices. Over the years, we have taken great pains to refurbish it to become the beautiful family home it is today. As part of that renovation, we felt it was particularly important to be able to have somewhere to park cars and also to be secure, so we created the driveway and installed a solid wood sliding-door access. It is wonderful to be able to pop out to a nearby pub or go to our favourite restaurants for a meal and not have to worry about having a drink or finding a taxi and, if you need to commute, you can be in St. Pancras in less than an hour from Canterbury West station. For anyone with older children there are excellent grammar and private schools – the house is particularly handy for the King’s School as access to the senior school is just through the Postern Gate opposite the house!
