About the area
Glastonbury is internationally know as a beautiful historic and very friendly town. Its past and its present are linked with its dominant landmark, the Tor. It's been a religious centre throughout history and back into the times of legends. There was a Celtic monastery here by 500 AD which, in the next 1000 years evolved into one of England's wealthiest and most influential abbeys. The town grew up alongside the Abbey and today is a small thriving town and a major tourist venue, welcoming thousands of visitors each year. Medieval Glastonbury - designated a conservation area - clusters around the evocative ruins of the Abbey. Just 5 miles from Glastonbury is Wells, the smallest city in England (population 11,000). Its centre is the market place (local markets twice a week) surrounded by many medieval buildings including the Cathedral and moated Bishops Palace.
*
Immediately to the south (2 miles) of Glastonbury is the town of Street and these centres provide a huge range of facilities and amenities. There are excellent local schools and independent schools including St Dunstans, Strode College, Millfield and Wells Cathedral School. About 12 miles southeast is Castle Cary station with a main rail line to London.Wearyall Hill is one of the most important areas of Glastonbury and is the siting of the Glastonbury Holy Thorn near its summit. Although not the original thorn tree, which was believed to have been planted by Joseph of Arimathea, it is a direct descendant, having been grown from a cutting of the famous original. Roman Way cuts across the hill on the southern side and Arimathea House has a favoured sheltered and sunny position looking out across the countryside below to the south.
Accommodation
Arimathea House has a sizeable neatly paved parking area that has direct access to The Roman Way. The parking area is flanked by the 2 garages and a brick wall which protects the steps and path which leads through the garden to the house. The path leads to a terrace where all stop to view and enjoy the fabulous views which include the Tor and the beautiful bordering countryside. The house has a striking appearance being built in 1926 in an Arts and Craft style in a distinctive architectural design with steep pitched roof lines and patterned brick styles. This style was continued when the house was extended in recent years. In 2007 the western part of the house was extended to provide the kitchen & breakfast room with the master bedroom suite above. The sitting room was extended in 2011 with the striking crenelated and leaded glazed addition that makes the most of the superb views.
