Property description

Built on the side of a hill, this amazing converted chapel offers a truly unique home for even the most discerning of owners. If you enter through the double doors from the street side entrance you will be confronted by the most awe-inspiring living space imaginable, providing the ultimate

‘wow factor’. It was the original nave of the chapel and still incorporates a very high vaulted and beamed ceiling, a plethora of large gothic windows with enormous bespoke shutters and handmade blinds as well as beautiful stairs to the mezzanine balcony floor. This stunning room includes a study area as well as a large library with built-in shelves where you can relax with a book and the main sitting room that includes a discreetly hidden cinema-style screen and projector and a very large log burner that can heat the whole place. It is also a great place to entertain friends and family as the main living space can accommodate vast numbers for a party. This floor also contains two double bedrooms and the family bathroom while the mezzanine floor includes the attractive master bedroom leading to a well-fitted dressing room and en suite shower room.

The day-to-day entrance to the property is through a stable door on the lower ground floor at the side of the building. The entrance hall leads to a large modern kitchen area and breakfast/sitting area, with a warming log burning fire, a range cooker and an integrated fridge and freezer. There is also direct access to the garden from the hall and this floor also includes plenty of additional flexible accommodation. There is a large studio/family room with double doors to the garden that is currently set up as an artist’s studio but would make an excellent games/playroom. It has double stained glass doors through to the dining room so this could be opened up to provide a large, open-plan area for family get-togethers and dinners. There is also a very useful study beyond the dining room that could be used as a fourth bedroom or the whole area could be reconfigured as a separate annex for elderly relatives or adult children wanting their own space.

What the Owner says:

We had always wanted to live in a chapel and found this one in a somewhat derelict state about five years ago. During the time we have been here we have worked hard to create a wonderful home. Although we obviously needed to renovate the property we didn’t want to lose its churchlike splendour so we haven’t divided up the main area but instead used it as the basis for our stunning sitting room and mezzanine area. The lower floor was originally the vicar’s quarters and the Sunday school room and we have built a new kitchen area and breakfast/sitting area, which is a very warm and cosy open-plan space.
Shepherdswell is such a friendly village and the nearby primary school has an excellent reputation. The village has plenty of facilities such as the local Co-op at the bottom of the road for all your immediate needs and the post office with its ‘farmer’s market’ style shop selling a variety of local produce is just down the hill. There are also plenty of activities in the village hall, from a toddler playgroup to a dance school and, if you enjoy walking or riding, there are a number of footpaths and bridleways.
You will also find the ‘Spartans’ football club, a cricket team, a couple of excellent pubs and the East Kent Heritage Railway that operates vintage trains between Sheperdswell and Eythorne. You can drive to Canterbury in about 15 minutes and it is less than 10 minutes to Dover Docks for the Continent.
