Property description

Even people who live in the Whitstable area might well be unaware of the delights of Preston Parade. This fascinating private road runs alongside the sea at Seasalter and is truly a secret gem. It includes a variety of individual houses all with uninterrupted views across Whitstable Bay to the Isle of Sheppey and even Southend in one direction and Whitstable harbour in the other. This property is no exception but it has the added advantage of being lived in by two artists who have used their talents over the past 30 years to create an exceptional and unusual seafront home.

The marine theme is apparent from the moment you step out of your car in the driveway where you will find a fascinating old rowing boat dredged up from Faversham creek, a coil of rope acting as a doormat and a porthole as a window in the front door. Once inside, the boating theme continues with the spacious open-plan area that includes the dining room, doors out to the covered patio and gorgeous garden as well as staircases to the upper floor. There is also a very modern and colourful high-quality German kitchen/breakfast area that will delight anyone who enjoys catering as it includes two built-in ovens, a hob and dishwasher as well as a central island. There is a lovely large sitting room with a modern wood-burner and a wall of windows overlooking the sea, while up one staircase you will find a stunning studio with windows either looking out over the garden or across the bay, far into the distance. For anyone who works from home this could continue to be a fabulous studio or office but it could also be a great place for older children to have their own space and there is room to put an en suite if required.

From the other staircase you can get to the very modern family bathroom and three bedrooms, including the charming master bedroom with a balcony where you can sit in the mornings and take in the views or enjoy a nightcap looking at the sunsets in the evening.

What the Owner says:

It has hosted innumerable parties including weddings, birthdays and Christmases and we shall be sad to leave but we feel it is time to downsize and move nearer our family.
Originally, the whole open-plan area was a number of small rooms but we have opened it up to create a warm and friendly environment. We have made some alterations to the property to capture the essence of a seaside home, including part of the main mast of the Thames barge ‘The Valiant’. There is a downstairs shower room that is very useful when family and friends come off the beach or you have been out on the water as the property also includes its own mooring if you enjoy sailing.
One of the special aspects of this property is that you can enjoy the sea views on one side and the stunning south-facing garden on the other and, since non-residents are not allowed to park in the road, the coastal view is never obscured by cars. We spend much of our time in the garden and, in the summer, always eat outside whenever we can. Over the years, we have designed different areas of the garden to reflect different moods and various places to sit. There is the vegetable garden, the greenhouse, colourful perennials and shrubs as well as a summer house and other seating areas – our garden has even been featured in ‘English Gardens’ magazine.
We are close to Whitstable with its harbour, individual shops, wonderful restaurants and main-line station and there is a small supermarket and parade of shops in Seasalter.
