About the building:

The Royal Victoria Patriotic Building is a Grade 2* listed former orphanage for female orphans of servicemen who fought in the Crimean War (1853 – 1856). The foundation stone was laid by Queen Victoria in 1857, and her great, great grandson, Prince Michael of Kent, attended the 150th anniversary celebrations in 2007.

After being used as a teacher training college and a school after the second war, the building was saved from dereliction in 1980 and turned into a mixed-use building, containing offices, workshops, a drama school and a bar/restaurant on the ground floor, and 29 apartments from the first floor up. See for full history.

The bar & restaurant within the building is called Le Gothique and it is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday. They also host weddings and other events.
