DIRECTIONS From Crediton proceed out of the town along Exhibition Road, turning right as you leave the town signed Shobrooke. THORVERTON is a village between Exeter and Tiverton, on the rich and fertile Exe Valley plain. The village heart is a poem come to life, charmed from the romantic era – with cob cottages, a quaint stone bridge astride a bubbling brook and a millennial green, often encapsulated by bright perennial flowers. Each month there is a market, with fresh local produce and a ‘Memorial Hall’ for regular community events. For a flavoursome pint of ale or a crisp cider there are two pubs, The Exeter and Thorverton ‘Arms’ – both full of character. Older children have a bus service to Q.E.C.C. in Crediton, whilst younger ones have a superb C of E primary school to attend. For tickly coughs and general maladies Thorverton has its own doctor’s surgery; and for the daily bread a shop/ post office. For cricketeers or “cricketers” (to be technical), there is a successful club open to all ages, which produced the first-rate player Giles White. The area surrounding the village is of geological interest, and has yielded many unusual rocks and minerals… it is even said that (small) quantities of gold have been found in the local waterways.
