HISTORY
The Royal Naval Hospital was built as a colonnaded Georgian Quadrangle with stone ornamentation. Built between 1809 and 1811, designed by architect William Pilkington and constructed by Miles Henry Peto. During the course of its history, it has been used as a hospital to receive casualties from the Battle of Waterloo, occupied as an Army Barracks and more recently as an NHS hospital. The property caught the eye of Kit Martin, renowned for his sympathetic restoration and conversion of large country houses and historic buildings. He managed to produce an award winning scheme of 59 houses and luxury apartments standing in a 10 acre site. The official opening was undertaken by HRH The Prince of Wales and was subsequently visited by HRH Princess Margaret and more recently by HRH The Duke of Gloucester. The communal grounds are landscaped and are approached by an avenue of Lime trees with vehicular and pedestrian access and planted with mix of Beech and other hedges.
