Property description
As featured in numerous publications chronicling the rich architectural fabric of Greenwich, including works by the eminent architect Nicholas Pevsner, this joyous three bedroom George III Grade II listed home earns its prominence with ease. With uninterrupted views and private access to Royal Greenwich Park you'll feel just like Anne of Denmark! Rumour has it James I gifted it to her royal highness as an apology for swearing at her in public - that said she had shot his favourite dog - either way we feel she did quite well out of it. Nowadays one can enjoy year-round views across the park of the Observatory and Flamsteed House from the grand first floor, dual aspect living space of this home. Wow your dinner guests with the night-time Meridian Line - a tried and tested conversation piece. A most elegant and impressive curving York stone staircase rises majestically upward through your seemingly endless stairwell - It's just wonderful. The interior follows a symmetrical yet endearingly quirky layout full of generous rooms, high ceilings and wonderful aspects both front and rear. The accommodation comprises three decent double bedrooms, a large kitchen/diner, a regal reception, bathroom, WC and handy shower room.
Steps lead down from the gentle incline of Maze Hill to your black original double door which is flanked on either side with shuttered windows. The hallway offers the perfect first impression. It's wide and wonderful with tiled flooring and the base of that jaw droppingly fabulous staircase slinking seductively upward - make a 'Lady Mary's' entrance every morning! Double doors open right to the split level kitchen/dining which leads rear through pretty twin French doors to your courtyard garden. The cooking area enjoys high and low level storage and plenty of space for spicing and slicing. There's a four ring gas hob, oven and space for the washing machine, dishwasher and fridge/freezer. Two front aspect sash windows face toward a rather lovely Queen Anne building opposite - you're in good company on all sides. The dining area is well proportioned preceding the French doors and there's a wood burning stove for winter cosiness. Ambling outward you'll find a leafy oasis full of lush greenery. The distant sound of scampering children and the odd happy dog supplies such a wonderful backdrop to sit and relax. Your Grade I listed rear wall (dating back to Jacobean times) offers access through a pretty arched doorway to the green, wide, open space of the park. It's an honour bestowed on only three other houses.
Back from the hall as you rise three steps you meet a handy WC on your right. Double doors on this and the shower room opposite niftily combine to create an enclosed shower room. When left as separate spaces, access is offered to the garden room/first bedroom. This is a comfortable space that connects to the courtyard through a wall of bi fold glass doors. Moving further upward through the triple height stairwell you're reminded of the house's proud scope - they certainly don't build them like this anymore. The turn of the stairs is substantial enough for a seating arrangement where a high level sash window invites a flurry of natural light. A neat bathroom with the first of those amazing park views greets you on the first floor. We'd wager your soaking time will increase with a vista like this. Onward bound you meet a most marvellous, dual aspect main reception. Two further eye widening sash windows supply yet more picturesque park views with two front aspect windows facing more period loveliness. There's an open fire with simple stone mantel for the winter crackle. Our favourite bedroom continues the park observationary pleasures. A similarly sized third double fronts the street with more high ceilings.
Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site supplies an endless list of top class attractions. The newly restored Cutty Sark sits proudly preceding the many pleasure cruisers delivering avid visitors to this unique world heritage site. Transport wise you're spoilt for choice. Trains depart every 10 minutes from Maze Hill station with services whizzing you to London Bridge and Cannon Street (in 10 and 14 mins respectively). The Waterloo/Charing Cross link should be restored in just over a year. The Maritime Greenwich DLR Station is a pleasant 10 minute walk across the park or along the river. From here services to Bank, Lewisham and Canary Wharf abound. Buses from Trafalgar Road link you to the Jubilee Line at North Greenwich. City Airport is barely 30 mins by train and you'll be close to several Cross Rail Stations come 2017. You're within an easy stroll of a cluster of quality long established traders - Drings Butchers, The Fishmonger, The Cheese Market, Rhodes and a variety of street market stalls. At the bottom of Maze Hill is the very dependable Theatre of Wine, several convenience stores including M&S. The town itself supplies plenty of handy chain stores saving you the bother of travelling too far. Blackheath's wide open green spaces are walkable and the Village is a real treat whatever the time of year.
