Property description
The novelist C.S. Lewis in his Chronicles of Narnia, wrote a book 'The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe' and by walking through the back of a wardrobe, the children (I forget their names) found themselves in a beautiful/enchanting land (Narnia) that was a world apart from their current surroundings. Roll on, Vine Cottage in Wem and we find ourselves in another 'secret world' in the heavenly, well stocked part-walled rear garden. Okay, it may be a bit of an exaggeration and I certainly wouldn't suggest you try and walk through one of the wardrobes because you would bang your head and in any case, they are upstairs and the garden is not. But you get the gist.... Frankly, to go off on another tangent, I could have referred to Doctor Who's Tardis, as this house is much larger than external appearances suggest. I am told that it is believed to originate from the 16th century and it has clearly been extended over the years, but nonetheless, it has retained many original features with exposed beams all over the place! Throw in an impressive exposed brick inglenook, plus further cast iron fireplaces and you may see why I am so enthusiastic. Of course, it's not that simple though....You will undoubtedly wish to up-date the decoration and make various adjustments, but if you can see through all that, then what we have here is a wonderful home in a delightful area. It's well worth a walk up Chapel Street and into the town as there are many interesting and characterful properties in this road. Don't fret about having to drive into Wem if you live here; you can leave the car at home and then stroll into the town with its associated shops, restaurants, pubs etc. The cottage itself has three downstairs reception rooms, plus a conservatory, so there is plenty of space to spread your wings. Upstairs, the 'beam theme' continues and the landing has lots of natural daylight with its skylight window. There are 3 evenly proportioned bedrooms and spacious family bathroom. The outside bit I have already covered, although to be honest, it is difficult to put in words how special the rear garden really is. In summary, this Grade II Listed cottage may require some decoration and tweaking in places, but my goodness, it really is a hidden gem and an early inspection is most strongly recommended.
