Property description

Tucked away behind The Street in the historic village of Martin, this adorable flint-covered converted cow barn is a real delight. It was originally built around 1809 and is still imbued with its historic character although it was converted in the late 1980s. You can feel the warm and welcoming atmosphere the moment you cross the threshold and wander into the beautiful country-style kitchen/breakfast room with its double oven and hob, fridge/freezer and dishwasher.

While this might be the hub of the household and where the family congregate, if you enjoy giving dinner parties or having guests over for Christmas or Sunday lunch they will really love eating in the unique dining room. It includes a charming exposed flint wall and a giant wheel that used to be driven by horses to grind the sugar beet for cattle feed. Not only do these features providing a fascinating insight into the property’s past but they also make this room particularly interesting. Apparently the wheel was still in use up until 1954!

The sitting room is equally delightful with its inglenook fireplace and wood-burning stove to cosy up to on a cold winter’s evening. Beyond this is a study where you can happily work but still be accessible, so you can feel part of the family. Upstairs, there are three double bedrooms including the master with en suite facilities and a family bathroom – so plenty of space for friends and family. The views from the bedrooms across the countryside are wonderful and the outside is just what you dream of when you think of an English cottage garden.

It is an ideal size with mature shrubs, trees and flower beds as well as a pergola you can sit under on one side of the garden and a terrace on the other so you can follow the sun all day. There is also a double garage and a driveway with enough space for additional vehicles and a caravan or motor home.

What the Owner says:

We have lived here for 24 years where we have enjoyed bringing up our family but we now feel it is time to make a move. What originally attracted us was the peace and quiet of the area and the fact the house is very secure as there are no windows on the street side. We have updated the property over the years and put in a utility room. We love our garden and spend as much time as possible outside. Martin is a charming village. It has lots of attractive properties – some were originally built in the 15th and 16th centuries and it gives the area a wonderful feeling of history. It is a very friendly place, with a pub that is about to reopen and intends to also be a coffee shop, restaurant and deli so should once again become the ‘heart’ of the village.
It is only a short walk to Martin Mill station so you can normally get to St. Pancras in about an hour and a quarter. Also, we are not far from Dover for trips to the Continent and the lovely town of Deal that has so many interesting and individual shops – it won ‘Town of the Year Award’ in 2013. For sporting enthusiasts the Langdon cricket club is in the village and other leisure activities are available nearby. It is also a great spot for walking and cycling around the Kent countryside including the Betteshanger cycle track and the National Trust walks. Many of the village residents have horses and ponies as it is also an excellent place for riding.
