Property description
St James Cottage is a Grade II listed cottage, reputedly to be one of the oldest houses in Chichester. Henry I first wife Matilda, ordered the building as a hospital for the treatment of people with leprosy, the property would have been in the countryside and a safe distance from the population of the city.
In 1781 the house was destroyed by fire but was rebuilt using as much of the original structure as could be salvaged. Over the years the cottage has become a charming comfortable home with features such as old brick flooring in the kitchen, an Inglenook fireplace with wood burner in the sitting room, polished pine flooring on the first floor and very pretty arched windows.
As mentioned, on the ground floor the bright sitting room and kitchen/breakfast room both have doors out to the garden. There is also a large utility/cloakroom. On the first floor there are three bedrooms and a family bathroom.
To the rear there is a well screened garden with an old well and pond. The present owner has built a wonderful office/studio. To the side of the property there is off-road parking.
The cathedral city of Chichester offers excellent high street shopping, many fashionable restaurants, cafes and bars, the Festival Theatre and a mainline station to London Victoria. Goodwood is famous for its many event days including the world renowned Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival for motor racing enthusiasts and a season of horse racing including Glorious Goodwood. There are superb sailing facilities around Chichester Harbour and windsurfing from the beaches at West Wittering. The area is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, with beautiful walks and cycle tracks over the South Downs and around the harbour.
