Area guide
Southchurch is one of the oldest parts of south Essex, with a documented history going back to the ninth century AD. The housing stock mainly dates from the first half of the twentieth century, when Southchurch developed from its original village into a residential district of Southend which it has now become. It has a population of 9,467 and the area stretches from Southend to Thorpe Bay, via the main Southchurch Road and around. Leisure:Southchurch is home to a thriving High Street, which is quite amazing considering its proximity to its bigger brother Southend. All sorts of independent shops have established themselves here, while bigger chains have continued to trade with promising results. The lovely Southchurch Park - an expansive area of green - includes a cricket ground and athletics ground, children\‘s playground, an ornamental lake, and a refreshment pavilion. The park also contains a bowling green, tennis courts and is the home ground of Southend Manor Youth Football Club. To the south of the nearest station - Southend East - is Southchurch Hall, a thirteenth-century moated manor house now open to the public as a museum, which stands in a small park, Southchurch Hall Gardens. Southend itself is a 5 minute drive away with all of its bars, clubs and restaurants.Getting here:Southchurch is served by one excellent train line, operated by National Express, called c2c. The line runs from London Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness. It calls at stations such as Basildon and Benfleet, before heading on to Southend East (the nearest station). Trains operate every 15 minutes during the day, these are more frequent during rush hour. It takes around 65 minutes to reach London by train. Southchurch also has good bus links to the surrounding towns, while those wanting to walk could make it into Southend within 15 minutes. Parking is less of an issue in Southchurch and a space can often be found for a spot of retail therapy. Side streets are often free to park on.
