Historical Notes



The eastern terrace of Stuart Place predates 1885 maps, although both the western terrace and the Ayr St area were built on the grounds of the old city prison which stretched from Caledonian Rd to the railway and closed in 1878. 1902 occupation records show the following residents on the now completed street. By then, the "Old Gaol" was the property of J.R Goddard, confectionery manufacturer.
