Property description

Situated in the heart of the Wiltshire village of Colerne, this exquisite stone cottage is perfectly located for country life yet just 7 miles from the centre of Bath with its restaurants, galleries, unique shops and theatres. The cottage itself embodies a similar balance of prettiness and practicality. “It is the quintessential characterful cottage without all the awkwardness of strange angles and low ceilings,” says current owner Luke. “It is easy to furnish and comfortable to live in!”The cottage is beautifully finished throughout having been recently decorated in neutral, calming tones and oozes with character, with features including a large Bath stone fireplace with wood burner, exposed beams and double glazed wood framed windows. Luke says: “All the floors, windows and doors are of outstanding quality, the workmanship and materials superb. An open plan sitting and dining room is spacious yet cosy with fireside seating. It was the fireplace which first struck me as I stepped in to the cottage.” The kitchen to the rear of the cottage boasts country style hand painted units and solid oak worktops, a range cooker and a ceramic tiled floor. A fully insulated, boarded loft space has potential for use as a workshop or for storage and has full electricity and lighting. The bedrooms at the rear of the property enjoy stunning views over the garden and across the Box Valley. “It is lovely and quiet here,” says Luke. “The cottage is a homely place to return to each weekend even if I am away a lot during the week. 40 High Street benefits from double yellow lines and wider street width: this means that 99% of the time there is a nice open view across the street to Providence cottage opposite, and I have never had any trouble finding a space to park nearby.”Luke comments “The garden is low maintenance and has a lovely terrace with wooden pergola perfect for entertaining, with a fire pit for evenings spent outdoors. There is also a storage shed, greenhouse and mature raised oak flower beds under which I have installed an irrigation and watering system. The garden is very easy to look after, but I have planted it seasonally so that there is some interest all year round. Even the wisteria which I planted just two years ago is beginning to mature and already starting to flower!”The village of Colerne has all necessary amenities including two pubs, a post office, convenience store and a Primary School. “There is a friendly pub just across the road which opened a year ago and has since transformed Colerne into an extremely sociable village,” says Luke. “There is a country village feel, and you can walk straight from the house into fields, but the historic city of Bath is only 7 miles from the village. I’m a photographer so it has been great to live in such a beautiful location, with stunning country walks and views. It is also easy to go into Bath in the evenings or for shopping at weekends.” Easy commuting to London by rail is available from Bath Spa station.“The property is in a fantastic location in a lovely village, and I hope to remain in the village with my next purchase. The neighbours are all very pleasant and welcoming and the Six Bells pub serves up great food and is a great spot to socialise.”
