Steeped in Scottish History once part of the Caldwell Castle this tower stands in the once courtyard of the castle and has been refurbished with a modern contemporary feel but shows off the wonderful sandstone brickwork that was built in 1234 and is a listed building.
Winter in this stronghold with panoramic views of the East Renfrewshire countryside just 9 miles out of Barrhead on the Irvine A736 road approx 1/2 mile from Uplawmoor, the tower has lay derelict for centuries, once the home and seat of the Mure family " Records for the Caldwell estate near Uplawmoor in East Renfrewshire go back to 1294. Gilchrist More (or Mure) acquired the lands and castle of Caldwell through marriage to the heiress of Caldwell of that Ilk and the estate remained with the family until the late 17th century. Caldwell Tower is all that remains of Caldwell Castle, which was probably built in the 16th century. When King David II was taken prisoner at the battle of Neville's Cross in 1346, Sir William Mure of Caldwell was appointed as one of the twelve nobles who negotiated the terms for his release. A later William Mure was involved in the Pentland Rising by the Covenanters, which ended in defeat at the Battle of Rullion Green in 1666. He escaped and his estates were forfeited and given to William Dalziel of the Binns near Edinburgh - Sir Tam Dalziel had led the King's victorious army at Rullion Green.
A new mansion house was built around 1712 by William Mure. However, the present Robert Adam designed Caldwell House was built by his son, William 'Baron Mure' about 200 yards lower down from the original. The castle fell into disrepair and only the tower (partially restored) survived.
The new owner has spared no expense in bringing the building back to its original state then adding modern internal finishings of Ground floor, Coombed ceiling kitchen with appliances, downstairs shower room with walk in shower cubicle, toilet and w.c.. Up to the first floor on newly carpeted stairwell the first level offers a lounge and bedroom off facility, Further up the original stone stairs to the top floor to a double bedroom with en suite shower. Gas is supplied by bottle but the Tower has central heating radiators, New upvc windows have been inserted in all the original stone windows with tilt and turn mechanism to allow you to open up and enjoy the spectacular view of the rolling countryside. There is 3 acres of land attached to the tower, at the moment the entrance to the tower is via Old Barn Farm from the farmers yard you can drive down through two cattle gates(please be aware that there is free roaming livestock from the farm so the gates must always be closed but cars can be parked outside the Tower on hard standing.
