Information
Breakspears takes its name from William Breakspear at the end of the 14th century acquired the land on which the house now stands. Long after the land was sold in 1447 to George Ashby, Clerk of the Signet to Margaret of Anjou (wife of Henry V1 of England, the manor house was built. The exact date is unknown but is estimated to be early to mid 1600s. The house retains many fine period features - the chimney pieces in the entrance hall and dining room (sometimes referred to as the Oak Room) and some 17th century panelling, all of which are being restored. At the end of the 17th century, the house was extended and, in parts, altered. Its magnificent bay windows survive from this period. 200 years later, Victorian additions were made, including the raising of the eaves to create attic rooms. A stroll through the grounds reveals other historic gems, including the listed Tudor red-brick dovecote that once stood in an orchard and is now undergoing restoration.
