Property description

Originally built as a long barn in the 1600s Cherry Tree is the ultimate ‘chocolate box’ thatched country cottage. Not only will you fall in love with the charming exterior but the beamed interior with its large inglenook fireplace, country style kitchen/dining room and vaulted first bedroom incorporating both ceiling and vertical beams, are equally adorable. The cottage is surrounded by fields on the outskirts of St Nicholas at Wade - an archetypal Kentish village in the midst of the Kent countryside, yet very close to the Thanet Way for easy access to Canterbury and London. To add to the delights and potential of this charming home is the large five room barn that is ripe for conversion into a holiday let, studios, offices or leisure facilities. At one end of the garden, overlooking the fields of rapeseed or wheat is a raised pergola seating area where you can enjoy barbecues and al fresco meals in the summer, while the front garden backs on to a paddock with horses and includes mature trees, shrubs and a pond with a waterfall.

The warm and friendly kitchen/dining room, with its beamed ceiling, includes an Aga and a wonderful Welsh dresser while the cosy sitting area has the large inglenook fireplace and an entrance area that makes an attractive music area or even a library. From the sitting room you can go upstairs to the first bedroom and here you can lie in bed looking up at the vaulted ceiling or enjoy the countryside views, while the second bedroom is up a separate staircase providing a level of separation and privacy. The ground floor also includes a cloaks area and a modern wet room style shower room and outside there is hard standing for two cars.

What the Owner says:

From the first moment I saw the outside of the cottage and walked into it we felt it ‘wrap itself around us,’ with its warm and friendly ambience. Also being down a cul- de-sac with very few properties along the lane it is very quiet, peaceful and safe for children and pets. During our time here we have enjoyed refurbishing the place including installing a new shower room, under floor heating and limestone flooring. We have however ensured we retained and enhanced most of the original features and even have a lithograph print of Molly Barnard Smith sitting at the bottom of the main staircase created by artist Robert Austin, designer of the £5 note. She was a well-known artist in her day and set up the original Twenty One Gallery in London for up and coming artists to display their work but lived at this property for 75 years until her death in 1969. Molly was also famous for using her childhood knowledge of the stars to steer home the ship she and her husband were travelling on, when the Lascar crew mutinied and locked the captain in his cabin.
The village is peppered with stunning Grade II listed properties including St Nicholas Court and its impressive parkland as well as the beautiful and historic 13th century church of St Nicholas. The surrounding properties create the wonderful character of the area and if you fancy a drink or a meal out and don’t want to drive there are two very good pubs – The Sun and the Bell. They both offer excellent food, hospitality,
