The doors were salvaged from the original house and had been wallpapered and covered over with hardboard in the 60s. The under stairs cupboard was discovered under years of wallpaper and its original elm door was eerily boarded up. The later circa.

20th additions, such as the vestibule, cupboards either side of the fireplace and Bakelite door handles were all retained as they evoked the different eras and ownership of the cottage. The flagstones were discovered almost completely intact under a later concrete topping and are a rare survival of an 18th Century original floor.

The doors and walls were removed in the centre of the cottage in order to improve the flow, allow light to flood in from the south facing garden and also take advantage of the view over the viaduct. Now when you arrive at the front door you can see right through to the back garden and lush valley beyond connecting the cottage with its unique landscape.

Upstairs the ceilings were raised in order to provide a new structural floor for the attic and the original elm joists were retained as a memory of the original ceiling. The oak and elm floorboards were retained, cleaned and oiled and a piece of original lime plaster was retained in the office. Elsewhere the walls were replastered with lime with a hemp binder that should benefit the thermal envelope of the building.

Where possible original materials were salvage and reused such as the old workshop sink which now graces the master bathroom, giving the cottage integrity while reducing construction waste and minimizing the projects carbon foot print.

Externally the walls were repointed in lime and large unsympathetic PVC windows were replaced with smaller double glazed wood windows matched to an original window found to the rear of 134.
