Property description
Chester Cathedral is set to give one of the most prestigious properties in Chester a makeover. The medieval Abbey Gateway - which links Abbey Square, Market Square and Northgate Street - is to be fully refurbished for residential use.
Full planning consent has been secured and works are set to begin on the Grade I listed building which will see former office space transformed into an exclusive two bedroom residential property in the heart of the city centre.
The Abbey Gateway dates back to 1377 when the monks of the site were issued with a license to crenellate` or build fortified entrances to their abbey complex. The upper storey of the gateway dates back to 1800. It features windows on both sides with views of Market Square and Abbey Square and houses the rooms over two floors which will be refurbished and let.
Works on the upper storey will include the installation of a private gated entrance way and a sensitive and high specification interior design scheme.
Vice Dean, Canon Peter Howell-Jones, said:
`We are delighted to be in a position to begin sympathetic building works on Abbey Gateway and can`t wait to see its transformation into a home. Everything about this property is special from its medieval history to its esteemed location. We are passionate about retaining the special character of our estate and are very serious about our role as custodians. We believe strongly that investing in our estate now is a necessity and will result in significant benefits for future generations.`
The cathedral is looking for a potential tenant who would like to be involved in the refurbishment process from the outset.
Cathedral Estate Manager, Neil Tunks, said:
`We would love to work with a tenant from the very start of this extraordinary project. We hope to bring someone on board who is as passionate about the space and the esteemed location as we are. We are keen to incorporate their ideas from the very beginning, transforming the property into the most sought after residence in the city.`
