Property description

If living in a Grade I listed stately home surrounded by about 1,000 acres of farmland and trees and stunning rural views appeals to you, this attractive two-bedroom apartment could be the answer. It is one of the flats in the impressive and historic Waldershare House – the former home of the Earl of Guildford. Waldershare Park was bought by Sir Henry Furness in 1705 and the red brick Queen Anne mansion was designed by William Talman and constructed around 1711. The estate passed, by marriage, to Francis, first Earl Guildford, in the mid-1700s and has remained in the family since that time although Waldershare House was sold and converted into flats in the late 1970s. However, it retains many original features that are apparent from the moment you approach the house via the private road and sweep into the vast driveway. Confronted by a plethora of multi-pane sash windows and a porch with extremely tall double wood front doors flanked by pillars, you will be excited to see what is beyond. Entering the vast baronial hall with its huge sash windows, attractive fireplace and stucco cornices you are immediately reminded of the elegance of a bygone era. Whether you take the stairs or the lift to the second floor apartment, you will find the impressive views across farmland and fabulous trees are an overriding feature.

As you walk into the entrance hall with its oak flooring, high ceiling, cornices and archways you have a feeling of spaciousness. This leads to the lounge/diner with its ceiling roses, fireplace and breath-taking views and has direct access to the recently installed kitchen/breakfast room that includes a double oven, hob and integrated dishwasher, fridge and freezer. There are two bedrooms as well as both a modern family bathroom and a separate wet room. Whether you are looking for a permanent home or a lovely rural weekend/holiday home, this flat is a delight. Outside, there are well-landscaped and maintained gardens, plenty of parking for a number of cars and a double garage with electricity connected within the garage complex. There is also a communal covered car wash area.

What the Owner says:

We were able to leave our keys with the maintenance manager while we were away and he would look in at least once a week to ensure that all was well and brought up any post to leave in the apartment. With only 16 flats in the house, we got to know all our neighbours and found them very helpful and friendly and there was never any noise except for the dawn chorus provided by the birds. You will often see lovely pheasants walking around as well as the hooting of the owls in the evening. Foxes are occasionally seen around the grounds – probably stalking the plentiful rabbits. The maintenance manager is a real gem and will do anything to help – and can turn his hand to most things.
We live in South Africa and, like swallows, we wanted to swap the South African winters for the English summers. We bought the flat about five years ago and have always spent about six months of the year here but, sadly, health problems mean we are no longer able to travel so sadly we have to say goodbye to our English home. Waldershare House is also very convenient as a base for visiting the rest of Europe from Dover docks or Eurotunnel and Canterbury for historic buildings, high-street stores, educational establishments and theatres. At the same time, we are only about an hour from London on the high-speed train, while excellent shopping facilities, doctors, hairdressers and restaurants are only a few minutes away in Whitfield.
