This impressive building was built in 1846 by Glasgow architect Charles Wilson as a private residence, then in 1859 the Glasgow merchant and philanthropist James Buchanan paid for its conversion to a school, known as the Buchanan Institute, to provide education and industrial training for the city's destitute boys. The richly sculpted window, large curved pediment and carved figure of a boy in a studious pose was added in 1873.
