The Hardway is an ancient village with its origins dating back to the Roman Conquest, the historic evidence points to the connection with Portchester Castle and directly between the villages and occupying Romans, the village was originally known as 'Hardway' grew around St Swithin's Priory Manor Farm. In the two World Wars the waters and foreshore at Hardway were heavily utilised for refuelling and repairs to the naval ships. The White Heather Public House became Gosport's Air Sea & Rescue base in 1942, in the autumn of 1943 work began on the beach hardening process in preparation for the D/Day embarkations. It is recorded that between 3rd June and 16th November 1944 there were at least 759 embarkations of landing craft, tanks, for both the British and Canadian armies to set sail for the D/Day landings.
