Property description
Situated on the edge of the thriving village of Saltford, in a slightly elevated position overlooking the meandering River Avon and the magnificent countryside beyond is Cherry Cottage, a lovely family home that in recent years has been both extended and fully renovated. Without doubt it was the setting that initially drew me to this house, says Andrew. The immediate surroundings are so incredibly picturesque that the house feels as if its deep in the countryside, and yet Saltford enjoys a very convenient location just 5.2 miles from central Bath and 7.8 miles from Bristol. The house was originally built in 1936, and began life as a rather modest bungalow, then at some point in the 1960s a dormer extension was added, though the work was done rather poorly. I purchased the house in the late 1980s, but it wasnt until 2005 that I decided to have the major renovation done. The house was extended out on one side and an entire first floor was added, so its now considerably bigger than it was and weve managed to maximise the floor space within the footprint. Internally it has a much more contemporary look and feel, and externally it now blends beautifully with the other lovely houses on the road.Id describe the gardens to both the front and back of the property as blank canvases, continues Andrew. But its the back, in particular, that has the greatest potential. It rises up so much so that from the very top you can see over the house, and across the river and the rolling countryside beyond. My plan was to add steps that would lead up to a large decked seating area, but the possibilities are endless. My favourite room is probably the main living room. Its a huge space that has a big bay window at the front that brings in those stunning views, and patio doors to the back that create a really nice connection between inside and out. The layout of the house is arranged in such a way that the fourth bedroom is currently on the ground floor, but Id say the potential is there to link it with the kitchen to create a fabulous open-plan kitchen/diner. Its definitely the tranquility and beauty of the surroundings combined with the easy access into Bath and Bristol that Ive enjoyed most about the location. Saltford itself has a golf club, a marina, rowing club, four pubs, post office, Tescos, Waitrose, Thai restaurant, and lovely countryside and riverside walks. Ive thoroughly enjoyed living here for the past thirty years, says Andrew, but I think that most of all its the wonderful setting and those magnificent views that Ill miss most when I leave.
