Property description

Currently a highly successful holiday home business, The Old Chapel in the picturesque Wiltshire village of Lacock is a beautiful property with a real sense of character. Formerly a Methodist Chapel, the three floor building has been exquisitely refurbished by the current owners into an elegant residential property with many original features.“We have always loved listed buildings with lots of character” say current owners Deb and Jim, “and the beauty of the Old Chapel appealed to us right away. It became a flagship property for our blossoming holiday home business. It is rare to find a property in the lovely Lacock, which really is the quintessential English village.”The simple aesthetic of Methodist architecture ensures that the former Chapel is full of light and space, and Deb and Jim have been keen to maintain this sense of openness in their conversion of the shell of the church into a home. “There is plenty of light from the large windows” they say, “and we have maintained as many original features as possible, including the large wooden front doors, which are just gorgeous. We have built around the existing features of the Chapel, so the windows are not interrupted and you get a lovely cross-section of the building. We don’t even need curtains, as it is so private. The décor is simple, in keeping with the original character – we wanted to show off the building itself, not overshadow it with fancy furniture! The kitchen / dining area has simple wooden units, and an old wooden table and pews we found in a salvage yard which date back to the time when the Chapel was in operation.”Surrounded by beautiful Wiltshire countryside, the National Trust village of Lacock is renowned for its picturesque streets, historic buildings and more recently as a film and television location for Jane Austen dramas and scenes from Harry Potter in the cloisters of the Abbey. “It’s a beautiful little village, and we have enjoyed being a part of the community and lifestyle here” say Deb and Jim. Lacock boasts a local primary school, three popular pubs, a restaurant, post office and a grocery store. Access is easy to Junction 17 of the M4 motorway, permitting straightforward travel to Swindon, London, Bath and Bristol.Favourite room “We love the entrance hall and standing in the open plan kitchen/ dining area looking up to the mezzanine – it really is a breathtaking sight.”Memorable event or favourite feature“Our restoration of the Chapel and the success of the holiday home rentals here have given us the confidence to take our business further and move on to something new. We have loved it here but it is time for us to let somebody else enjoy it now!”What they’ll miss most“We will miss owning a Chapel, which is a unique and special privilege.”Best thing about the grounds or local area“When we were restoring the property we found some old pictures of the gardens as they were when the Chapel was up and running, so we have replicated the wrought iron entranceway and gates.”
