Property Location
Northlew is a Devon village on the edge of Dartmoor. A lively place to live with many young families and lots going on. It has an attractive main square surrounded by traditional buildings, some of them thatched; just off the square are a village store, pub, the local primary school and two churches, the Church of England parish church of Saint Thomas Becket and the Methodist church. The village can be found approx. 7 miles northwest of Okehampton. The village is named after the River Lew which runs through the valley and is crossed on entry to the village. The fine Parish Church of St Thomas of Canterbury contains a beautiful carved screen, pews and fascinating roof bosses and dates from the 15th century. The market town of Hatherleigh is only 3 miles away form Merlot Cottage and is a bustling and vibrant market town and was mentioned in the Domesday Book and received a charter from Henry III in 1220 to hold a market every Tuesday, which it does to this day with a poultry and other stock market. Supporting an active community is a good selection of shops, a post office, a school, churches and pubs and a recently built community centre.
Okehampton, on the A30 dual carriageway, one of the gateways to Dartmoor, lies 7 miles to the south and provides a wide range of facilities and shops and a choice of supermarkets including a Waitrose. Here there is secondary education that caters up to the age of eighteen. The Cathedral City of Exeter is less than 30 minutes by car from Okehampton.
The larger town of Okehampton nestles on the Northern fringes of the Dartmoor National Park, within the town there is a wide range of local and national shops to include a Waitrose and a Victorian shopping arcade. For those keen on sport there are thriving football, rugby and golf clubs and a leisure centre with swimming pool and gym. Education caters for children up to the age of eighteen. From Okehampton the Cathedral City of Exeter is less than 30 minutes away by car; from here further road links to the M5 can be found.
