COLEFORD is just a mile or so away and is a conservation area with many picturesque thatched cottages. The hamlet is nestled in a peaceful valley approximately 3 miles west of Crediton. There is a particularly well-restored ancient thatched inn (The New Inn), which together with the carefully preserved adjoining properties provides an unspoilt example of a traditional small Devon community. King Charles 1 is reputed to have visited the hamlet during the Civil War and he stabled his horses there on 27th July 1644 and also inspected his troops from the porch of Spencer Cottage.
